What is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)?
FND is one of the fastest growing diagnosed neurological conditions. Awareness and diagnosis of FND have increased dramatically in recent years, with many neurologists now recognising it as one of the most common conditions seen in neurology clinics alongside epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.
Functional Neurological Disorder is a condition that affects how the brain and body communicate. People with FND can experience very real neurological symptoms such as weakness, tremors, seizures, pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulties, dizziness, sensory changes and problems with movement or speech — often without structural damage to the nervous system being found on scans.
FND can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, and symptoms can range from mild to life-changing
How can peer support help?
Living with FND can feel isolating — especially when symptoms are misunderstood or difficult to explain to others. Peer support creates a space where people feel seen, heard and understood by others who have shared similar experiences.
Connecting with others living with FND can help reduce feelings of isolation, build confidence, provide practical coping strategies, and offer hope through shared experiences and understanding.
For many people, simply being in a room where they don’t have to constantly explain themselves can be incredibly powerful.
Peer support isn’t about “fixing” people. It’s about connection, community, validation and reminding each other that you’re not navigating this alone.
What to Expect?
Our peer support groups are warm, relaxed and welcoming spaces for people living with FND to connect with others who truly understand.
There’s no pressure to talk, share personal details or participate in anything that makes you uncomfortable. Some people come to listen, some come to ask questions, and others simply enjoy being around people who “get it.”
The groups are informal and supportive, with conversations often covering everyday challenges, practical tips like managing fatigue and symptoms, celebrating wins, and sharing experiences in a safe and understanding environment.
There’s usually plenty of laughter too because feeling understood and less alone can be incredibly powerful.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, still trying to make sense of your symptoms, or have been living with FND for years, you are welcome.
Any individual diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder and their carer is welcome.
The sessions run for approximately 1.5 hrs and are charged at $20 per session (includes morning tea).
Bookings for the next event in Brisbane can be made here - Saturday 27th June
