Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Treatment and Support in Brisbane

Functional Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a condition that affects how the brain sends and receives signals to the body, leading to symptoms such as weakness, movement difficulties, tremor, or functional seizures.

People living with FND often experience very real and disabling neurological symptoms that can significantly affect movement, independence, and everyday life.

Occupational therapy can play an important role in helping people retrain movement, manage symptoms, and return to everyday activities.

At One 3 Care, we support people with FND to understand their symptoms, retrain movement and daily functioning, and gradually return to meaningful activities.

At One 3 Care, we specialise in supporting people living with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) through trauma-informed, inclusive, and evidence-based occupational therapy. We understand the heartbreak, confusion, and frustration that comes with navigating FND and we’re here to help you regain control over your life..

We’re excited to welcome clients into our new clinic space in Woolloongabba dedicated to Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).

This calm, supportive space is designed to meet the unique needs of FND clients and is now open for bookings.

Clinic appointments are available every Wednesday, home visits by appointment and nationwide outreach via telehealth.

What is Functional Neurological Disorder?

Functional Neurological Disorder occurs when the brain has difficulty sending and receiving signals to the body correctly.

This can lead to symptoms that look similar to neurological diseases such as stroke, epilepsy, or movement disorders. Common symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty walking or balance problems

  • Limb weakness or paralysis

  • Tremors or abnormal movements

  • Functional (non-epileptic) seizures

  • Fatigue and cognitive overload

  • Dizziness or sensory changes

Although these symptoms can be frightening and disruptive, research shows that many people can improve with the right understanding and rehabilitation support.

You might experience:

Woman with headache holding her head
  • Sudden weakness or tremors

  • Gait or balance issues

  • Dissociative episodes (non-epileptic seizures)

  • Sensory changes (numbness, tingling)

  • Cognitive difficulties (memory, focus)

  • Crushing fatigue

  • Slurred, slowed, or stuttered speech

  • Changes in Vision

  • Tremors, jerky movements, or twitches

Our Approach to Treatment for Functional Neurological Disorder

We work together to develop a clear understanding of how FND is affecting your nervous system and daily life.

This often includes:

  • education about current research and understanding of FND

  • identifying patterns in symptoms

  • understanding triggers and flare cycles

Developing this understanding can help reduce fear and uncertainty around symptoms.

FND symptoms can disrupt normal movement patterns.

Occupational therapy supports people to gradually retrain movement and daily activity skills through practical rehabilitation approaches.

This may include:

  • graded re-engagement with daily activities

  • movement retraining in real-life tasks

  • rebuilding confidence in movement and mobility

Many people with FND experience boom bust cycles where they push through symptoms on good days, followed by significant flare-ups.

We help people recognise these patterns and develop strategies that support more stable and sustainable activity levels.

Our focus is always on helping people return to the activities that matter most to them.

This may include:

  • returning to work or study

  • rebuilding daily routines

  • increasing community participation

  • developing sustainable activity pacing strategies

Why Occupational Therapy Helps

Occupational therapists focus on how symptoms affect everyday life.

Rather than focusing only on the diagnosis, we work with people to rebuild the skills, confidence, and routines needed to participate in daily activities.

This functional approach can be particularly helpful for people living with FND because symptoms often fluctuate and affect multiple areas of life.
